A film company in Tredegar has launched a project highlighting the importance of historical sites across Blaenau Gwent.

Cymru Creations, based in the town centre, has released more than 30 short films based in historical locations across the borough, named Exploring, to investigate and preserve the photographic archive of Blaenau Gwent.

The series of short videos focuses on places such as the old Ebbw Vale Steel works, Abertillery tin factory, and Tredegar town clock, and aims to educate locals on the history that surrounds them.

Kevin Phillips is the director of the company and says he was incredibly excited to launch the project that shows the diverse history in his home of Blaenau Gwent, and hopes as many people as possible will now engage with them.

He said: "This was a very important project to us because it really does show how much history we have in the area, and highlights why it shouldn't be forgotten.

"It started when the kids from our sister company, Made in Tredegar, came to us saying they wanted to do something to help encourage learning about the area's heritage, so we decided that a series of short videos would be the perfect way to do it.

"We went out to local museums with photos from our archives as well as ones that were donated, and researched the locations to find out more about their past.

"We also worked with local historian Phillip Prosser to fact check the details, and after we wrote the scripts with the children, filmed on location to compare how it was then to how it is now.

"Some of the sites in question look quite different now as you could imagine, though others have stayed very much the same which is a powerful image.

"The response from locals has been great, and we're planning on having a premiere for the kids who took part next year to show our appreciation for all the effort that went in to making this happen."

Children from the Made in Tredegar film Company came up with the idea to encourage learning about the borough's history

Alan Tyrell is the project manager at Made in Tredegar, and says the work his team of young volunteers have done has been fantastic for promoting the area of Blaenau Gwent as a tourist destination in Wales.

"We have a lot of young volunteers who come here to learn skills in the media industry, and I really have to praise the work all 35 children did from conception to the research and filming," he said.

"It's a simple concept with the children standing in front of the site and talking about it's importance, but I think it's very effective and bodes well for similar projects in the future.

"We explored some well known areas, such as the old Ebbw Vale steelworks and Tredegar town clock, as well as some that aren't so well known.

"There's so much history just waiting to be discovered here, and hopefully this small project can inspire those who live locally, as well as others who are just visiting the area to find out more."
