A fabulous aerial photo of Ebbw Vale in the late 1950s.Another iconic photograph of Ebbw Vale in its Industrial heyday!
This aerial photo of Ebbw Vale is dated to the late 1950's, when Ebbw Vale works was in its Golden era and the jewel in the crown of the huge RTB organisation. The £12m Capital scheme announced in 1950 was completed by 1956, bringing the plant up to 1 million tons per year output capacity. This involved capital spends across the works and quarries and as can be seen in the photos, cash was not only invested on the plant but also on improved social activities with the opening of the Lever Hall in 1956 and the Youth Club in 1958. Most Ebbw Vale residents, will now struggle to recognise their town in this photo. The plant, noise and pollution has gone, but so has 12k reasonably well paid jobs and a lot of facilities for employees and their families. This scene was to remain for the next 15 years until the closure of the south end in 1975. The remaining plant then expanded north with the removal of the Drill Ground Tip. But the plant's heyday was in the 1950's & 60's and is epitomised by this iconic photograph. ...
