A huge welcome to Joel Budd, acclaimed journalist from The Economist, who visited the Institute today to meet with current and former residents as part of his research into life in the area during the 1960s and 70s.

It was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on such an important period in our community’s history, and to share stories that deserve to be remembered and celebrated.

A big thank you to Lyn, Kerry and Jean for coming along and generously sharing their memories, experiences and insights - your contributions will play an important role in preserving and telling the story of Llanhilleth’s past.

❓ Did you know…

From the earliest days right up until the mid 1970s, miners had to provide their own work clothes — and their outfits often followed the everyday fashion of the time giving a fascinating glimpse into how personal style and tough industrial work once went hand in hand.

Step into the Pithead Baths Exhibition to see how miners’ clothing has evolved through the decades. From practical layers to surprising trends, it’s a story of work, identity and change.

Free entry , open daily 9.30am–5pm
