Description
Henry Hughes was born in Tredegar in 1833. As a young child, he witnessed the Chartist march on Newport in 1839, worked underground, opening and closing ventilation doors, and survived the cholera epidemic of 1849. He emigrated to Ohio with his stepmother to work in the coalfield before moving west to the Minnesota frontier as a married man with his own young family. He survived the 1862 Sioux uprising where so many others died.
